An Evening With Chris Upchurch of DeLille
Winery
January 30, 2009
After all the crazy weather in December,
our long anticipated intimate tasting with Chris Upchurch,
winemaker for Delille Cellars. We began the evening waiting for
a few stragglers. Chris had picked up a few
bottles from the shop and one of the attendees asked Chris what
wines he drinks at home. This led to an interesting discourse
of Chris's travels and favorite grape varietals, particularly
the Loire region of France and Australia. Interesting, as
Delille stylistically is not the typical overextracted, big
jammy fruit bomb down under style. However, Chris explained
that some producers such as David Powell of Torbreck fame makes
some of the most balanced wines available.
Besides he can travel to Australia in our off season and
actually be in Australia during their harvest season. As we
tasted throught the fabulous line up from both the Doyenne and
Delille wines, Chris told the story of the beginning 17 years
ago and evolving philosophy and dedication to perfection that
continues today. Chris said that when he wanted to add Syrah to
the line up, there was a bit of resistance, but went ahead with
a barrel. Lucky for us, Doyenne was conceived. One of the best
treats and a surprise, was a bottle of the Grand Ciel Cabernet
Sauvignon. Wow!! We revisited it 2 days later at the shop and
it was showing even better!

Spazzo's at Redmond Towncenter provided hearty appetizers
specially selected to match the wines. As the evening wrapped
up, I realized it was 9:25pm and the event was scheduled from
6-8pm, I saw lots of smiling faces and a couple of comments that
this was one of the best winemaker events they had ever
attended. A very enjoyable evening. Thanks, Chris. Debi
